Short Story Reading and Blog Finale

For this weeks assignment I read "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce. This short story was very interesting to read and really gave the reader a vivid image of what was happening. It was interesting that in the beginning of the story the man is official going to die, then the middle gives you the glimmer of hope that maybe he would live after all, but in the end the author brings you back to the reality that the man really does die, he was just oblivious to what was happening at the moment.

I have mixed feelings about this being the last required blog entry and blog responses. I am happy this is the last blog entry and responses because this lessens my homework load by a small amount per week. However, I have enjoyed the blog entries and responses because they give me a chance to share with my classmates the trials and tribulations I am having with this English class and see what their problems are as well.

All in all, I have enjoyed this class thus far and I am ready for whatever challenge this class brings me throughout the rest of the semester. Hopefully everyone does very well for the rest of the class! Good Luck!

Poems and Short Stories

Coming back from Spring Break this week and getting all my assignments done, was quite a challenge for me. As you can see I am writing this blog post on a Saturday and I normally do not wait this long to get my assignments done, but oh well.

I read my two poems and two short stories for this week's assignment and I found one short story that I really enjoyed, "Winter Dreams" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This story was really interesting to me, I never knew that a person could develop such a large business in cleaning golfer's clothes. The other items I read were "Araby" by Joyce, "A River-Merchant's Wife: A Letter" by Pound, and "Susie Asado" by Stein.

I did find one small similarity between most of the poems, short stories, and Hemingway's book, and that was "love." However, I do not think that I could find enough information to write our semester project over that topic. I am having such a difficult time trying to find something that I can write a five-page paper about and use "A Moveable Feast" as a reference. I did not find anything while reading that book that I would be able to write about. I am hoping that Mr. Burkhead will give me some ideas to get the ball rolling on finding a topic. It will be due before we know and I do not want to wait until the last minute!

Hemingway

I finished reading "A Moveable Feast" for the second time this week. After reading it twice, I felt very sure about myself for the test. When I got the Spec sheet, however, I was surprised that it was a 2 page essay about a setting, character, point of view, etc. It kind of made me feel that I wasted my time reading the book twice, but then I thought about the Semester Project.

I feel very intimidated by the Semester Project and then due date for that is looming just a month away. I have been thinking about a topic that I could use and have came up with none. Hoping to find a connection I went ahead and read the scholarly essay that can also be used for the semester project. There were some minor connections but nothing that stuck out in my mind as a good topic. Hopefully when I view the video program about "A Moveable Feast" I will have an "ah hah" moment and the topic will be right there in front of me. These are high hopes but I am praying that it comes true.

Book in Common

I have almost finished reading our book in common, "A Moveable Feast" by Ernest Hemingway, for the second time. After reading this book a second time I think I have been to understand the book fore. I understand the book is about his life in Paris with his wife Hadley and his son Bumby. Hemingway writes about all the prominent people he met in Paris including Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein among many other people.

I have been thinking a lot about the semester project and still have yet to find anything that I can write a paper about. I am usually not good at thinking about a subject that I can write a paper over, especially if there is no real requirements about a specific subject. I am hoping, that after reading the other requirements for the semester project, that I will be able to think of a good subject to write about.

Little Less Overwhelming as the Weeks Progress

The requirements for our English class this week were not too overwhelming, despite that I was still having computer problems this week. The readings about grammar and punctuation that we took a quiz over this week really helped me understand grammar better. I was not taught much, if any, grammar in high school but just by reading those few pages I learned many things.

I have already finished our book "A Moveable Feast" by Ernst Hemingway but I am still having a hard time grasping the concept and meaning of the book. I am in the process of reading it again so that maybe I will get more out of it the second time. Since we have a semester project that pertains to this book I really need to be grasping the meaning soon.

The "This I Believe" essay is something that I became familiar with when I was in English 100. I was required to read an NPR "This I Believe" essay in that class and then make a response to it so I was somewhat understood what the "This I Believe" essays are all about. I enjoying being about to voice my opinion about something that I believed in. Looking forward to next week in because your requirements are just to read "A Moveable Feast", maybe I will be able to finish next week!

Rare Week at WKU

I was very surprise to be woke up Wednesday morning by a text message saying that WKU-Bowling Green campus was closed today. I had heard from many upperclassman that classes were almost never canceled here for snow. However, I was rather happy classes were canceled because I was suppose to take a test that day but I was not very prepared for it then.

Although it was a snow day, I was a little frustrated because I was having problems with my computer. I could not get onto the Internet in my dorm room because there is something wrong with the Cisco program that is downloaded onto my computer. I tried everything to fix it including removing it and then re-installing it back onto my computer, which did not work. The bad part was there was not one to contact Wednesday because the IT department was closed. Also the computer labs were closed, so then I was stuck trying to do my homework on my friend's computer just so I could get it done.

On a happier note though my 20th birthday is today, so I am very excited. My fiance took that day off of work but I ended having to do homework all day because my computer was not working before. However, tomorrow my fiance, our friend Logan, and I are headed to Louisville for our annual trip to the Farm Machinery Show and tractor pulls Saturday night. I am hoping to have a wonderful birthday and Valentine's day and I am ready for whatever lies ahead of me this weekend.

Second Week of Classes

I didn't have a very good start to my second week of classes. I came down with a bad cold over the weekend and I am feeling rather lousy. I even missed my one class today, because I didn't want to get any one else sick.

I am feeling very overwhelmed at this point in the semester with all the assignments that need to be done. I am only taking 15 hours this semester, and I have taken 18 in the past, but this semester seems to have more requirements than usual for each class. I have come to prefer online classes because I am then able to make a schedule of when I will do each assignment. With regular classes there are always "pop-up" assignments that need to be done, which means it is hard to have a set schedule.

I am also in the process of applying to another school so that I can transfer there in the fall. I really enjoy Western's campus and all it has to offer but I would much rather be closer to home. I found out on Friday that I was accepted to that college, now it is just waiting game to see how this semester turns out for me and then getting my grades sent to the new school. I really enjoy school, but I have come to a point in my life where I am ready to move on and open a new chapter in the book of my life.
